Smooth Muscle Tissue
Smooth muscle tissue in the walls of the trachea and the lungs help to regulate airflow into the lungs. The smooth muscle then relaxes to dilate the bronchi and bronchioles. The dilated airway provides less resistance to airflow and in turn allows more air to pass in and out.
