The following is a video that shows how air moves into and out of the lungs. Several Terms were mentioned in the above video such as inhalation, and exhalation, Pulmonary Ventilation etc.
The Mechanics of the Breathing can be broken down into two parts, Inspiration ( when air moves into the body, of inhalation) and Expiration (breathings out). Pulmonary Ventilation is simply known as breathing.
Inspiration
The Diaphragm and Intercostals contract, and the thoracic cavity increases, which then lifts the rib cage, and thrusts the sternum forward. The lungs adhere tightly to the walls of the thorax, so it stretches the thorax to a larger size. The volume of the lungs increase, which then makes Volume inside the lungs increase, and continue to create a vacuum, which then sucks air into the lungs. This is known as inspiration.
Expiration
The Ribs eventually depress as external intercostals relax, which then make the rib cage relax and the diaphragm becomes elevated and dome shaped, returning to its normal position.

This image simply shows the process I explained in the above explanation of inspiration and exhalation.
